Inside the cramped waiting room of First
International Bank of Grenada Ltd. headquarters, a wall plaque
proclaims: "There are no elevators to the house of success -- you
must climb the stairs."
Which is a good thing, since
there are no elevators in First Bank, either, just a staircase that
descends past a trash pile and a vacant showroom down to the humid
streets of this colonial capital. |

First Bank's
financial statements then emerged under the signature of Kenneth N.
Craig. But David Marchant,
the muckraking editor of a Miami online newsletter called
Offshore Alert,
disclosed that Mr. Craig wasn't a CPA. It turns out the California
Board of Accountancy had revoked his license in 1996. Documents in
the case include excerpts from a letter Mr. Craig wrote to clients
telling them: "I have decided to move my residence and business to a
prime vacation spot allowing me to surf, fish, swim, sunbathe and
pursue any other escapist activities for which I feel a need." (Mr.
Craig says he merely helped compile the First Bank statements and
didn't audit them as a CPA.) |
