Three detained in Grenada in connection with newsletter's allegation that leader took payoff

Intro:
Police detained a journalist and two members of an opposition political party for allegedly distributing a news article critical of Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, authorities said Friday.

Excerpt: Police said they also detained opposition legislators Claris Reynold and Eric Jeremiah of the National Democratic Congress for several hours late Wednesday for allegedly handing out copies of the article, which appeared in the Miami-based OffshoreAlert newsletter.

Police did not say if the two men would be charged, but said they are searching for other people who may be distributing the article.

Mitchell has accused the opposition of fanning the story that appeared April 30 in the OffshoreAlert, which alleged that the Caribbean nation's leader accepted the money for appointing a German-born man to a diplomatic position.

Mitchell has said former trade counselor Eric E. Resteiner offered to cover travel expenses for Mitchell's delegation on a promotional and investment tour of France, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Kuwait in 2000.

Mitchell filed a libel lawsuit against OffshoreAlert on Thursday.
