MATT head wants to strike out 'criminal libel'

Intro:
THE PRESIDENT of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers yesterday said that he intends to launch a regional campaign to have the offence of criminal libel erased from the statute books of Caribbean countries.

Excerpt:

Gibbings said several media houses in Grenada have been threatened with lawsuits if they publish a story which originated on the Offshore Alert, an internet news organisation. He said reporter, Odette Campbell, of the Grenada Broadcasting Network, was suspended for hosting a public discussion on the issue.

He added that criminal libel did not belong in a civilised world where there was a respect for the freedom of the press, and argued that the civil courts provided sufficient remedies for persons who were wronged by the media.
