The man who ignited the controversy with his report in a Miami newsletter David Marchant has now called the entire episode “incredibly sad”.
Marchant told a Grenada radio talk-show: “I find what is going on in Grenada to be extremely, extremely sad for the country as a whole. I feel sorry for the residents of Grenada.
The government has threatened legal action against anyone repeating the story, and official reports say a suit has already been filed against Cable and Wireless Grenada for comments on the issue posted on one an internet chat forum.
Other local media houses have been threatened, and four people, including a journalist have been detained.
“There is a concerted effort to bully the population into submission, to make it so that people are afraid to even discuss this. It just incredibly sad,” Marchant told talkshow host Eddie Frederick.
“The government of Grenada should be apologizing to the public for allowing over 40 offshore banks to collectively defraud thousands of people around the world of hundred and hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said
Marchant has been investigating the island's controversial offshore sector for years, before expanding his interest to general issues of corruption on the island.
“Sad is the only word that I have,” he said in his latest interview about the situation.
