Grenada's Mitchell Lauds Importance Of Independent Media As Caricom Argues Over Haiti

Intro:
Newly-installed chair of Caricom and Grenada Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell lauded the need for an independent media during his open remarks to fellow leaders on July 4, but also stressed the need for press responsibility.

Excerpt: His remarks came less than two months after his battle with the Grenadian press as allegations of bribery circled around his head. On July 2, the island's Governor General announced he will appoint a commission to investigate allegations that Mitchell had taken some $500,000 from Eric Reistener, a German man, in exchange for an ambassador-at-large position. Mitchell has denied the claims.

On Sunday, Mitchell, who is suing the Miami-based publisher of Offshore Alert for publishing the allegations, said, “We recognise the importance of an independent media. We also recognise the importance of a responsible media; a media which operates on the premise that facts take precedence over sensationalism.”
